The SOLO apartment is a rehabilitation project of a small apartment of approximately 45m2, located on Olarias Street in the Mouraria neighbourhood of Lisbon.
Inspired by the ceramic tradition that has permeated this place since the 16th century, we delved into the geological roots of the city, where clay, sandstone, and limestone intertwine in a combination of textures and materials that serve as the foundation for this project.
The techniques and spaces of a ceramic workshop are translated into the proposal through different environments, creating distinct transition elements that exalt artisanal craftsmanship, both in terms of the nature of the materials and how they were molded and installed. These transitions, both spatial and functional, are highlighted by stones like Verde Viana, Moleanos, and Azul Lagoa, as well as the dark veins of Kambala wood.
Ceramic pieces emerge as works of art, unique objects that celebrate traditional craftsmanship techniques.
In collaboration with ceramist João Rolaça, a special piece was designed, resulting in a large lavatory for the bathroom, meticulously executed through a special firing technique using Grés de Sal. The results of such firings are always unpredictable, resulting in unique finishes in terms of spots and shine.
